How to stop cold if you feel its onset

Once you feel the first symptoms of a cold, you do not have to immediately run to the pharmacy for medicines. The best protection against the common cold is timely prevention, but sometimes despite all our efforts, the cold still overcomes us. The fact is that microorganisms and viruses can live on untreated surfaces up to 18 hours (until the virus finds its owner). Viruses and bacteria penetrate the mucous membrane of the mouth, nose, and eyes, spreading through the air with a cough, sneezing and even a simple conversation. You may not be able to completely prevent a cold (ARVI), but there are several ways to ease the manifestation of symptoms and accelerate recovery (these methods include frequent hand washing).

If your throat starts to hurt, rinse it with salt water. Rinse with salt water will help reduce inflammation and wash up mucus and phlegm. To dilute the salt in water, add 2.5 g of salt (1/2 teaspoon) to a glass of warm water, then rinse the throat with this solution for 30 seconds. After rinsing, spit out the water, trying not to swallow anything.
Repeat this procedure throughout the day, as soon as you feel that your throat is starting to ache again.

Take a hot shower to relieve the stuffiness of the nose. The feeling of stuffiness and heaviness in the nose greatly worsens the course of the cold. To get rid of it, stand under the hot shower and wait so for a while - the steam will help alleviate the severity.

Use a saline-based nasal spray if you have a runny nose. Salt sprays are prepared on the basis of salt water and are intended for spraying into the nasal cavity in the treatment of the common cold. For prevention and treatment of the common cold and stuffiness, use a saline nasal spray. You will immediately feel relieved. Continue to use the nasal spray every day until you feel the improvement.

To maintain optimum humidity, turn on the humidifier. Moisture in the air helps to weaken the secretion of snot and mucus, allowing to avoid stuffiness and heaviness. Put a humidifier in your bedroom to keep the air moist during sleep. Also, put the humidifier in other rooms where you spend a lot of time. Do not forget to change the humidifier filter more often, because a dirty filter can lead to problems with the respiratory system. Read the operating manual for the humidifier to know exactly when to change the filter.

Drink 8 glasses of water a day to maintain the body’s water balance. Dehydration will worsen the course of the common cold, so it is important to drink 8 glasses of water every day. A sufficient level of fluid in the body also slows the formation of snot and sputum, and you will not feel such heaviness. Do not drink alcohol, coffee, caffeinated and sweet drinks, because they contribute to dehydration.

Eat 4-5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day to strengthen the body’s immune system. If the body does not receive the necessary nutrients, it will be more difficult for it to overcome the common cold. Consuming vegetables and fruits is one of the easiest ways to get the nutrients needed for recovery. Try to eat for a day a salad with a couple of servings of fruit. According to some studies, garlic and citrus fruits help reduce the duration of the common cold, alleviating its symptoms.

Every night, sleep at least eight hours. When you are awake, your body fights with infection, so it is very important to provide your body with a good rest so that it can overcome the disease. Try to go to bed a little earlier than usual, if possible - take a nap during the day. The more you relax, the higher the chance to defeat the cold.

If there is such an opportunity, skip classes at school or work. It is quite difficult to provide yourself with rest and drink enough water when you are working or studying. If you have the opportunity, stay at home and focus on recovery so that your condition does not deteriorate.
If you decide to take a day off at work, as soon as possible contact the authorities by phone or email. Inform that you are ill and can not be present, apologize for the inconvenience. In addition, you can contact the therapist and get a sick leave sheet.
If it seems to you that the authorities doubt whether to give you a day off, ask if there is an opportunity to work on that day remotely (if your specialty allows it)
